The Clone Metric
How owner-dependent is your business, really? Here is how to measure the one number most owners never track, and the one that decides whether you can ever step away.
The idea
Most growth metrics measure the business. This one measures you.
Revenue, margin, headcount: those tell you how the business is doing. The Clone Metric tells you something the others hide. It tells you how much of the business still lives inside your head, your inbox, and your decisions.
We built it because we kept meeting owners with healthy numbers who still couldn't take a Friday off. The business was growing and the owner was the ceiling. Profit looked great right up until the founder got sick, went on vacation, or simply burned out. So we made the hidden thing visible and gave it a name.
In plain language: the shrinking list of things the business can't do without you in the room.
Why it matters
A high Clone Metric is the difference between owning a business and being owned by one.
You get breathing room
When tasks run without you, your calendar stops being a hostage negotiation. You go from reacting all day to actually leading.
The business gets more valuable
A company that depends on one person is fragile and hard to sell. One that runs on systems is an asset, not a job you can't quit.
You can finally grow
If your ops are breaking at $500K, they will collapse at $1M. Cloning yourself out of the daily work is what makes the next stage survivable.
The goal of fractional operations is exactly this: to clone your judgment into systems and proxies so the business keeps running well when you step out of the room. Not slideware, not shelfware. Real infrastructure that stays handed off.
The assessment
Calculate your Clone Score
Ten honest questions. Each one looks at a part of your business and asks the same thing: can it happen without you? Answer for how things actually work today, not how you wish they worked.
Pick one answer per question, then hit Calculate. A higher score means a more cloned, less owner-dependent business.
How to read your score
Didn't love your score?
Good news: the Clone Metric is the one number you can actually move. Moving it is the entire job of fractional operations. We find the tasks that only you can do, then we build the systems and proxies that take them off your plate, and we stay until they stay handed off.
